FINAL REFLECTION

 

1. What they like about blogging.

Firstly, before I entered this course, I already know about blogging. I love to blogging because I can read other’s mind by just entering their blog. The purpose why I am blogging is because I like to read e-novel. I love to read and sometimes I need to spend a lot of money just to buy books. However, after I know that we can read the books or novel in someone’s blog, I become addicted to surf their blog. And it becomes my new hobby.

One day, I wonder if I have my own blog, it must be fun as I can share my view or experience to others bloggers. However, I do not know how to start my blogging account. Since it is a new thing, my friends do not know how to help me. I am very happy to have blogging assignment for this course. Now, I know that if we must go to www.blogger.com in order to start blogging. This is my blog suhailisarif69.blogspot.com.

 I love blogging because it is like an e-diary for me. Specifically for this course, I have to write what I have learnt for that particular week. As I said before, blogging is like e-diary. What make I like about it is, I can decorate my entry @ diary for that day like put picture, video, or anything that related with the topic I learnt on that week. Compared to diary, I cannot put all those things on it.


   2. What they do not like about blogging.

One of the advantages of blogging are I can get comment from others bloggers about my entry. So, I know whether they agree with me or not. However, I am quite disappointed because after I wrote the entries, it is quite difficult to get feedback from them. Maybe this is my fault because I think if I want others bloggers to leave their comments, I should start comment their blogs first.

Another thing is if I go to my friends’ blog, they tend to write entries that make me sad. This is because they write it unprofessionally by using their emotions while writing the entries. They should realize blog is open to all surfers through out the world. Everyone can read our blog. So, they have to bare in mind that if they want to write anything, they must think the consequences.

 

   3. What have they gained from blogging eg. Language skills, improved fluency, critical thinking, improved thought processes, technology skills etc.

   4. How?

Many things I gain from blogging. In terms of critical thinking, I have developed it as I have to reflect what I have learnt for that particular week. Besides, I have to think why the lesson is important and how I apply it to my students. Besides, I cannot simply write want I want to write because blogging is a worldwide thing. I have to think the sensitivity of other people.

            Technology skill is another skill I learnt from blogging. Via blogging, I know how to put picture, video, music, and other gadgets in my blog. It makes my blog more attractive and i have put others bloggers link in my blog. So, it is for me and others blogger to go to their blog.


  5. What they like about the course

            This course has taught me many things about how to integrate technology in ESL classroom. They are internet skill, photo editing, audio editing, video editing, e-book, developing four skills in lesson plan and how to use software to teach children English lesson. I can apply this knowledge when I am going for teaching.


   6. What they do not like about the course

            I do not like the time that we get to learn all these interesting and beneficial skill within 14 weeks. I think if I get more time to learn other skills, I can get more knowledge.

            Other than that, I realize I just learn about how to use technology in teaching English for the instructional material. The non-technology instructional material is not being teach in this course as the course entitled using and developing resources in ESL classroom.


   7. What they have learnt from the course?

            As I said earlier, I have learnt internet skill, photo editing, audio editing, video editing, e-book, developing four skills in lesson plan and how to use software to teach children English lesson.


   8. What they do not expect but have learnt from the course

            I do not expect to learn about internet skill like photo editing, uploading in the youtube and so on.

 

 

   9. What they expect but have not learnt from the course.

            At first I expect to learn how we are going to be creative to use non-traditional teaching aids in the ESL classroom. However, we are learning about technology teaching aids and it is a new experience to me.

 

10. If they can change anything about the course, state what it is and explain.

            I think we should have lecturer and tutors for this course. It is quite difficult for my lecturer to handle it alone. This course requires us to do many tasks. I think if she has more assistants, it can help her a lot.

Week fourteen – Final exam and portfolio!!!


    

Week 14th is the final week for this semester. We have come to this week after we have learnt many new and useful things throughout the whole fourteen week. As we have learnt many things, this week is the week where our knowledge will be tested.  The exam consists of four questions on what we have learnt in this course. Overall, I am satisfied with my answers.

For me, the questions are more to critical thinking and application questions. We have to think deeply on how we are going to apply the teaching materials that we have learnt in order to English language. For example, there is one question that we have to write a summary about a story about animal story, a legend, a myth, a funny story or folklore since Malaysia has many kind of stories. Before choosing the story, we have to consider its suitability for students in primary school. Then, we have to design a storyboard for the story in preparation of animal video. Here, I have to think quickly and not to forget to make sure it is suitable for children. I choose The Hare and The Rabbit because I found that it is suitable for children as this story is about two animals who are want to race in order to find who is the fastest animals in the world. I realized that it is not easy to choose suitable for children as we have to consider the suitability of content, the teaching point that we want to teach them, the familiarity, and the moral of the story and so on. After this, I will try to be more critical in order to choose the best story that can make them to acquire more knowledge especially about English language.

Week thirteen – Children Software

             This week, Puan Foziah introduced us to another teaching instructional material which is children software. She mentioned about Freddie Fish and other examples. By just looking at the CD cover and the title, I assumed that this software is applicable to be applied in the ESL classroom.

According to Oxford Dictionary, software is a program and other operating information used by a computer. So, children software can be said as a program meant for children using a computer as a tool for teaching material. This software contains many purposes in order to teach English for children. For example, it can be only focus on grammar exercises, reading skill, vocabulary and so on. There is also game activity for them in order to acquire Englsih language.

I think that children software is interesting to be used in ESL classroom. The game and activity that contains in the software creates a new dimension in teaching field. In stead of only used chalk and talk and common task sheet, children software allows teacher and students to gain new knowledge using this software. For instance, the Freddie Fish software, it is a kind of problem solving activity. Children has to help Freddie to solve his problem where his school faced with problem as there is no students want to come to school. Freddie and his friend investigate this problem. Here, students will help them. Thus, it allows students to develop their cognitive skill. Moreover, it can attract pupils’ attention to learn English indirectly suit with their nature of learning which is they learn indirectly rather than directly. Games are the best tool as children like to play and more attracted to play game compared to other tool.

week tweflth


On 7th of October lecture, it was a new week after we have a short break for Hari Raya Puasa celebration. The class started with discussion on our assignment. When she asked about it, I cannot answer it honestly I did not do anything during the Raya break. I wanted to spend my time to do at least 50% of the assignment. However, I was so busy preparing for Hari Raya. I had no choice to tell Puan Foziah that I still not working on anything on it. Suddenly, after we told her that our works are not reach 50%, she immediately told us to work on it now. Thanks a lot to her as she gave us opportunity to finish my assignment.

She also has came to me and asked me personally the progression of my assignment. After I told the truth, she gave me her opinion on how to design a good lesson plan. She also gave some tips which was I can integrate the skill with other skill. It is essential to integrate these skills because it can complement each other.

Week eleven - Analyzing research papers

        A week before Hari Raya Puasa. I cannot wait to going back. But, I must be patient since there was only one class for resources class. This week, we have a new task which is we have to analyze research papers that discuss/report on the research in using teaching aids in the classroom. This is a pair work task and my partner is Azliza.

 

          Researches are important in order to be black and white evidence. From research, we can see that everything that we want to say can be supported by research. So, it is essential to find prove that how important teaching aids to integrate in the ESL classroom. Puan Foziah has set up criteria that we need to find for our article. These guidelines help us in order to find a suitable article. She also has gave us some cites that can be visited and it makes our finding easier.

 

          Last week, Puan Foziah has gave us some notes that need to be presented this week. Our topic is “What do we want teaching materials for?”. So, as teacher we have to question ourselves, how the teaching aids will help us in our teaching and learning in the ESL classroom. We have to reflect what the roles of the teaching aids are. They are two roles of teaching aids which are DEFICIENCY and DIFFERENCE. Teaching materials are to save learners from teachers’ deficiency. It means that, teacher can use teaching aids as their supporters in their teaching and learning process. I found that as a teacher, we have to select appropriate material as well as creative enough to exploit them.

Week ten - submission of Assignment 2: Assessing and Manipulating videos for the ESL classroom

         Satisfied! Relief! Happy! Those words reflected my feelings as this week we have to submit our second assignment.           In this assignment, we have to work as a pair work. My partner is Azliza Ramlee. This is our second time work as pair work as our first collaboration is on video edit task. I wanted to keep on work with her because she is good and she is the best partner ever. Thanks to you Azliza. Besides, she supported me while I am facing with difficulties through out finishing this assignment. I found that choosing the right partner is really important as we need to complement each other in order to produce quality of work. While dealing with this assignment, we discussed to divide the work. Azliza was taking the Earth song video while I took the second video. This is because the consideration of time consuming. However, even though we did not do the work together, we still discuss if anyone of us faced with problems while doing the assignment. From this assignment, I realized how cooperation is important.

 

          For second assignment, we have to manipulate and produce new materials in order to use in the ESL classroom. I decided to choose use pictures that have been extracted from the video to be the new developing material. This because it is suitable with my teaching point which is giving instructions. These pictures will help a teacher to give instruction to pupil. Yet, they are also will be used in the production stage. So, as a teacher, it is essential to produce and manipulate the materials as it is not a waste. Moreover, it shows our creativity as many things can be produced from a single video clip.

 

          For the task for this week, Puan Foziah has introduced on how to use Microsoft Publisher. We have to work in pair and my partner is Azliza. I am comfortable work with her and that is why I still want to work with her. We have to create pamphlet, business card, poster and book cover for this task. Puan Foziah has left some room for us to create any theme for our task. For second task, it is a group work. My group members are Azliza, Huda, Rimala and Safrina. Using Microsoft Publisher, we have to create a newsletter. We decided to create a newletter for Cooking club.

WEEK NINE

This week, Puan Foziah is back. For this week, I think she wants to talk a lot of things since she was absent last week. Yes, I am right. She has given us a deep explanation on our last assignment which is PORTFOLIO. All our works which has been done through out the whole semester must be handed in (compiled) as a portfolio. Let me recall back our task started with photo edit, audio edit, and video edit and so on. We must compile all the tasks as well as the tutorials. I would like to thank her because she gave us opportunity to compile all our works. It makes us appreciate our works as it has been compiled in one portfolio. Later on, I hope she will give us back this portfolio after she has marked it. This is because, all the works that she has given to us are beneficial and they are really suitable to be used while we go out for teaching. I like the idea to compile our work as teacher can assess students’ work from this portfolio. She can see the students’ progression and yet, she knows what can be improved from this portfolio. Personally, I think portfolio is black and white evidence on students’ work. So, if anyone wants to see our works, they can refer from this portfolio.

Other than that, all the works that has been done through out the whole semester plus the tutorials can make my work easier after I will be posted to primary school in the future. If I am forgetting on how to edit photo or etc, I just refer from my portfolio. It shows that how important and beneficial the portfolio is for me as I have a short term memory.


Last week, even though Puan Foziah was not entering the class, she has given some notes to be presented in this week. So, this week we have to present it. For my group, our topic was “Working with the coursebook”. We have to work in group of 5/6. This topic also has been shared with other 2 groups. This topic is long and we have to make it short. Puan Foziah wanted to train us to be a good presenter as a teacher we have to confident enough to be in front of the classroom. Yet, the notes that she has been given to us train us to analyze important ideas as well as guide us to explain what are they in the notes.

week eight

Today, we have to pass up our e-book. Overall, I am satisfied with our works as this is the first time we produced an e-book. We can get a new experience by using Microsoft Power Point (MPP). Before this, I just use MPP for helping me in my presentation. I did not know that we can create an e-book using MPP. Yet, until at the end of producing our e-book, I did not know that we have to save it as power point show file. After we have uploaded our e-book in the 4shared.com, we just realized it. Alhamdullillah, I learnt a useful knowledge from this task. So, immediately, we changed it and upload it again in the 4shared.com. Luckily, we still have time for it.

Puan Foziah did not enter class today. But, she has assigned two new tasks for us. The first one is “Devising resources for teaching the four skills language skills”. We have to devise an activity for speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. We have to be in group of four. These are my group members:

This is the first time I will work with them for this course. We have divided the four skills so that each one of us will take one skill. Since Puan Fozian did not enter the class, it was quite blurring because we did not what we have supposed to do. However, Izyan has helped us by explaining the task.

For this task, they are four main components that we have to consider before we design our task which are:
1.The materials must be based on specific CS
2.Descriptions on how to use it to teach the specific chosen skill.
3.The tutorial on how to make it
4.Rationale for producing the materials to teach selected skill
It is important to choose and design beneficial resources so that it can make our

week seven

After we have 1 week semester break, I felt fresh to learn a new topic. This week, we have to produce e-book for Primary School students. We have to refer to Curriculum Specifications so that our e-book is related with their syllabus. Puan Foziah reminded us to choose the topic and t for title for our e-book.

This time, I preferred to do as a pair work. I worked with Azliza Ramlee again as I found that I am comfortable to work with her. Besides, she has many creative ideas in her mind. We decided to choose topic clothes and the title is “Look at me”. We have referred to CS year 3.

week six-video editing

We got a new assignment for this week. They are two assignments which is for pair work and group work. Firstly, we have to edit a video from a reality show “So You Think You Can Dance”. It is a group work. After we have doing our assignments individually and in pair work, this is the time for us to work in group of five/six. We have divided the tasks so that the smoothness of the work can be achieved. We try to finish it before the semester break starts. Luckily, we manage to finish it. Thanks a lot to my group member, Azliza, Safrina, Huda Pauzi and Fikkri.

In this assignment, we have to download the videos from http://www.8tv.com/. Then, we have to join the raw materials to a complete video. After that, the splitting skill will be tested as we have to split the video. We have to select the dance parts only. We choose to use Windows Movie Maker and Cyberlink Power Director in order to join and split the video.

Secondly, it is a pair work. My partner is Azliza Ramlee. I cannot wait to do this assignment because we have to produce a video about anything. However, Puan Foziah has reminded us to find the concept and the theme for our video. Before we start or plan our video, she has shown our seniors work. We have sketched our video and we have referred it to her so that we are in the right track.

Week five-Audio Editing

Before Puan Foziah starting her lesson about audio editing, we have to work in group and discuss the topic identifying priorities in young learners’ language acquisition. As a teacher, it is essential to know that children learning a second language involve negotiating meaning rather than translating word by word in a particular sentence.
Children might face with difficulties while learning second language. So, it is important for a teacher to guide them in order to acquire the language. For example, by using relia, real object, prompting, use Total Physical Response Approach and so on. I realize that I should be creative and verify my techniques so that it will suit with my students’ level of proficiency.

Week Four-Photo Editing


Wow! It is quite enjoyable to learn about photo editing. I felt excited because I knew after this class I can edit my photo since I am not photogenic. But it is not important as how I am going to use this knowledge for my students is more important. Puan Foziah has shown before and after edit picture to us. It is impressing because the original photo is very simple and after she edited the photo, it became an interesting photo. Before this, I just know that there is super impose and from this class, I can learn how to create a new one. I realized that it is not impossible if we want to edit our photo. For some people, photo brings memory and it is black and white evidence that can be shown to their children as well as their grandchildren.

For me as a teacher, photo can be one of the resources that can be used in the classroom. Photo can help me to teach English language as it can trigger pupils’ attention and make them provide the language. However, the photo should be appropriate and clearer so that pupils can see the photo clearly and what we want them to learn will be understand vividly. If the photo is small in size, not clear and cannot be seen throughout the class, it is difficult to teach them. From this class, I learnt how to remove red eye, brightness, crop, resize and put some effects to the photo by using software like Adobe Photoshop and Picasa. I have asked one of my friends what software has use as she experts in editing photo. She suggested to use Photo Pos Pro and Anvsoft Photo Manager. Thanks to her.

I cannot wait to apply this new skill as it is important to try what we have learnt. So, we can test whether we can acquire this skill or not. As a task, she asked us to choose any photo and edit it. Then, we have to upload it in the Photobucket so that everyone in this world can watch our masterpiece.

ANOTHER STEP TO BE A RESOURCEABLE TEACHER

THIS WEEK , we have learnt about working with young learners. They are six major points that related with this topic which are

 Children’s ability to grasp meaning
 Children’s creative use of limited language resources
 Children’s capacity for indirect learning
 Children’s instinct for play and fun
 The role of imagination
 The instinct for interaction and talk

EACH GROUP will be presented for each group. For my group, we have chosen CHILDREN’S ABILITY TO GRASP MEANING.

CHILDREN’S ABILITY TO GRASP MEANING

BASED on our discussion and lecture’s note that Pn Foziah has given us, we can say that, children grasp meaning or understand the vocabulary from repetition of words, routine, familiar and concrete words. According to Piaget, children cannot or difficult to understand abstract meaning because they are still in the concrete stage which they need support or real thing in order to grasp the meaning. As a teacher to be, I think that it is essential for me to know and understand this condition because I will be an English teacher. If I want to introduce new vocabulary to my students, I should consider these factors in order to make sure them to grasp the meaning at the maximum level. Hence, exposure to English Language through more than one medium appears more effective than relying on a single medium (Byrne, D. 1988). We agree with this statement as it gives opportunity to the students to grasp the meaning in different ways and make them enjoy the teaching and learning process.

WHAT can we do as a teacher? So, we can provide concrete materials for instance using puppets, gesture, different intonation, demonstration and applying the Total Physical Response approach in our lesson. This is because students best learn if the activities involving their senses; hear, touch, smell, taste, sight. This action could make them understand the lesson better as

“I listen, I forget,
I see, I remember,
I do, I understand”

This expression was claimed by the Nuffield Mathematics Project and it objective was to guide primary school pupils to learn through concrete experiences. We agreed with this approach because the knowledge that they might get from this experience may remain long as they can practise what they have learnt.

We also have to bear in mind that we should avoid giving abstract word because they cannot understand and accept the meaning. In terms of choosing the resources for them, we should exploit the resources wisely in order to produce meaningful teaching aid as it made our presentation meaningful and interesting. The purpose of using a lot of teaching aids was pupils really love something that was colourful and they like to observe concrete things in order to understand the lesson better. According to Moon J. (2005), she claimed that pupils will feel more interested in using the resources as they get opportunity to practise their English.

A PICTURE WORTH THOUSAND WORDS

What can you see from this picture? I assume that all of you will have different interpretation. I think this picture can be used in my classroom. I can ask their opinion as it arouses pupils’ attention in order to interpret the picture. Yet, I can use this picture in my teaching and learning process because it has variety of shapes. There is something to be pondered which is as a teacher, we should creative and find something interesting that can be used in our class. This is because interesting, attractive, colourful picture can help pupils to understand the lesson better. So, what is your interpretation? For me myself, I think it is a map. How about you?

Week two ~ Second assignment


This week is the week where we get our second assignment. Our internet skill will be tested in this assignment. The elements that our lecturer wants to see are Downloading, Encoding, Storing, Burning, and Searching skill. This is a group assignment. Each group consists of five members. After we choose our group members, Puan Foziah changes our groups because she not satisfies with our choice. She has set her criteria in order to form a group which is we have to be in mix gender and race. At first, all of us are not agree with her since we are used to choose our own group members before this in IPIK. But then, after she explains her reasons why she doing this as she wants us to work with everyone. This is a kind of preparation for us to be in group with people we are not used to work before.

 

For this assignment, we have to use Curriculum Specification for English Year 5. Besides that, each group will get different topic. For my group, we get topic “Family First”. She reminds us to use this CS. At first, I keep on thinking, why we have to follow CS. This is because, I thought it is depends on us to search pictures that we want to choose. After that, I realize that how important CS is.

CS has been set up by the Ministry of Education as a guideline @ framework for teachers to assist them in their teaching and learning process. It guides teachers to prepare for her lesson. A teacher without CS is like a blind man without his cane. Yes, maybe she can teach without CS but students will not get what they suppose to get for that particular year. In CS, it has learning outcomes and certain things that students need to acquire suit with their stage of development. If teachers teach them with topic for that not supposes to be taught, it might disturb their cognitive development.

 

Puan Foziah also gives examples for each skill. For example, we can use keepvid, Bit torrent and so on to download the videos that we intend to keep. I asked my friends if we have another alternative. She said we can directly save the video if we use orbit downloader. For encoding, she suggests to encode in Total video converter. My friends tell me that we can use Super converter. These are the storing and burning software we can use to store our file that has been suggested by my lecturer.

            I have to admit that I am not familiar with all these software. Luckily, I have this course for this semester. I hope I can learn many things from this course since my lecturer is very supportive and she has much knowledge about it. Besides, my course mates also are here to help me in order to learn.

WEEK ONE: INTRODUCTION TO PBEY3102

This is my first week in this course, PBEY 3102-Using and developing resources for young learners. I kept on thinking what this course is all about. I cannot wait to enter the class. I assumed it was more on how we as a teacher to be develop and exploit everything around us in order to apply it in the classroom.

However, what I thought was wrong as actually it is about we use technology as the source that can be implemented for our students. I found that it was fun because I did not realize that anything related with technology can be used in the classroom.

My jaw dropped because looking at my lecturer, Pn Foziah, she knows everything about technology. It made me envy as a new generation and a human being that born in a technology era, did not know much knowledge about technology compared to her. She seemed excited when talked about anything related with technology. She made me realized that a simple song, video clip or photo can be resources for our lesson. I did not that all those things that can be found around us were adequate to us.

While my lecturer presented in front of the class, I kept wondering how I am going to learn all these new things because I am not use to them before. I am quite nervous and worried if I cannot survive in this course. It seemed all my friends familiar with technology as I do not know anything. Now I realized that how it is important for a teacher to learn new things and be creative and innovative in order to produce a good quality of resource. This is important because my students can get the benefits as this is my job as a teacher to educate them. However, I have a strong feel that my friends and my lecturer can give guideline on how to acquire this new knowledge.

I hope that by entering this course, I can widen my knowledge on how to develop high quality of resources. In addition, I want to equip myself and I need to work hard so that I can acquire the knowledge very well.
